Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer and has been detected in all parts of Utah. Since Radon is a gas with no smell and no signs, the only way to detect radon is to test for it.
You can contact the Utah County Health Department and arrange for a free Continuous Radon Monitor that can test your home for radon and give you results in 2 days.To request this FREE radon testing of your home, contact the Health Department at 801-851-7509. Obviously, the only downside to free is that you have to wait in line. In this case it is a virtual line so if you are not in a hurry just call them up and get on the calendar. If you are in a bigger hurry you can call a home inspector who has the equipment and pay them top do it. You can expect to pay between $100 and $200 for this service.
If you would like to do your own testing, you can purchase a test kit for about $10 by going online to Radon.Utah.gov
. You can also purchase a test kit from the Habitat for Humanity ReStores in Orem or Spanish Fork or by going online at www.habitatuc.org/radon.htm
Finally, you can reach out to a radon mitigation company who will test for you. The only problem with this method is if you have trust issues like me and do not like have the tester and the fixer be the same company!
